Symbology is a new body of work by Liz Pechacek made to explore tactile formalist qualities while maintaining an obscure sense of utility.  These works draw upon her practice as a potter and reference functional ceramics through scale, use of multiples, ceramic as a medium and craft.  Devoid of any clear purpose, these objects convey an invitation to use that is obscured by context, like artifacts from some other culture and time.

Liz Pechacek
Minneapolis, MN
Liz Pechacek was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, by her artist mother and chemist father.  She grew up making all manner of things and found her way to clay in college.  She earned a BFA in ceramics and a BA in art history from Indiana University in 2012.  She now operates her ceramic studio in Minneapolis and teaches at Powderhorn Park.  Her work is all either hand built or slip cast from hand built prototypes.  Layered with slip, stains, and glaze, the work achieves a rich and complex surface that above all communicates a sense of touch.  Pechacek draws from a diverse range of historical sources, such as Mimbres and Neolithic Chinese pottery.  She bridges these influences with Danish Modern Ceramics and the work of such pioneers as Lucie Rie and Ruth Duckworth.

Lily Stan Pop Up

EventsJosef HarrisComment

We're stoked to be hosting a Lily Stan Sample Sale.

November 22 from 10a-5p.

She will be offering samples ($50 & under) of one-off's from my studio, as well as 15% off of regularly priced items. Don't miss it!

A little about Lily:

"I am a 24 year old designer who graduated from RISD & worked at Kate Spade before moving to Minnesota to design childrenswear for Target. I started Lily Stan Studio because I missed the daily creative process in college of pattern drafting & sewing. Also, I wanted to change my habit of purchasing disposable fashion, so I decided to make myself a sort of uniform. Lily Stan Studio is that uniform. It is an ongoing collection of pieces that are meant to be layered together to make a concise closet to last beyond one season."

Ping Pong Party - July 11

EventsJosef HarrisComment

It's been too long since our last Ping Pong Party.

Here's the scoop:

  • $5 to play (winner takes all), prizes for 2nd and 3rd place
  • Registration from 4:30p-5:30p day of. We suggest pre-registering by emailing info (at) foragemodernworkshop (dot) com with your name, confirmation that you will be on site, ready to play by 5:30p, and level of play between 1-3 (3 being excellent, 1 being you play for fun). This will help us create round robin tournament brackets for each level of play.
  • Tournament will go from approximately 5:45p-10p. Marty will be back to run the tournament.

And for those who don't want to play - that's OK! We will have BB Gun playing sweet tunes at 6:00pm and DJ's Chris Hontos and Collin Weiland all night long!

Plus - food and drinks available from Parka.

And just so you know how awesome it's going to be, here's the recap from our last ping pong event.

New Hopewell Workshop exclusively for Forage Modern Workshop

EventsRebekah CookComment

In a recent Dwell interview, I was quoted saying "Quilts have such a grandma connotation, so it’s great they took this old thing and made it so modern" in regards to this release with Hopewell Workshop. Though I wish they wouldn't have chosen these "eloquent words," I guess it really is what I love so much about Hopewell's work.

When I think of quilts, I think of slumber parties at my late grandmother's house. After a night of ice cream, "Sweating to the Oldies," listening to Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker, and playing cards, we'd snuggle under one of Grandma Barb's quilts. It was one of the most amazing feelings, because she'd had them for years - my mom had probably slept under the same quilt at one time. And they always had the most perfect "safe at Grandma's" smell.

So, yes - quilts do have a grandma connotation. In the best way possible.

And now Hopewell takes this rich history - co founder, Eliza proudly continues a family tradition of quilting that dates back to her 18th century Indiana Quaker roots - and makes it absolutely chic. The color combos, the design, the quality of work, the fabric and material choices: they are absolutely stunning.

They came up with the following two ideas:

Ok - don't you think they totally captured Forage right away? But I had to go with the 1st one because they picked our unofficial color of the year: PORANGE! Pink and Orange. After a quick chat, a second round followed

And with their final touches, signature linen backing and serious quality craftsmanship, we get this gorgeous quilt, the New Courthouse Catbird exclusively for Forage:

Combining the inspiration of Bauhaus artist, Josef Albers, with a traditional courthouse quilt pattern, Hopewell came up with this handsome quilt which is both striking in its design and soothing in its palette. Such an amazing experience.

Further, nothing makes me more happy than to be introduced to companies that embody Forage's values: ethically made quality design that will last forever and has been made by people who love life and don't take themselves too seriously. A huge thanks to Rita from The American Edit for introducing us to Hopewell Workshop. Eliza and Claire have taken their experience in woodworking, ceramics, sculpting, knitting, quilting, and painting and created stunning quilts and pillows that will leave you feeling safe, warm, and perhaps a little nostalgic—just like at Grandma's house.

You can purchase the New Courthouse Catbird exclusively for Forage in store or online. We also brought in some sweet and HUGE pillows by Hopewell as well.

Wind and Willow Home In-Store Launch Event.

EventsJosef HarrisComment

After a hard-won spring, we’re particularly fond of Araya Jensen’s bright and happy designs. Producing colorful housewares under the name of Wind and Willow Home, Jensen’s bowlsspoons, and mini-planters have us dreaming of savory summer salads and sweet window-sill succulents.

A love of good looks is what initially led this talented maker to a career in interior design; where Jensen logged an impressive twelve years of service. An enterprising spirit and solid midwestern work ethic is then what led Jensen towards beginning her own business.

Existing originally as a curated web shop of handmade gifts from other designers, Wind and Willow turned into a brand of it’s own quickly, after the launch of her own line, one Jensen referred to simply as ‘Dipped.’

A sensible collection of wooden housewares, Jensen’s hand-dipped pieces quickly became more than an experimental add-on to the shop once units started selling - and fast. With Wind & Willow Home, bold colors, bare woods, and organic textures manifest themselves into something unique, at once accessible and special. Preferring an organic variance, there is no taping or measuring when Jensen hand-dips and dyes all of her bowls and spoons. This imbues them with a sense of scandinavian modernism without the usual sterility. For each Wind and Willow collection released semi-annually there’s the accompanying seasonal color story to look forward to as well. Wether it’s juicy pink peach with prickly green pear for spring or warm walnuts and marbled metallics for fall, any item from Jensen’s line is a delight. With accessible price points and a sense of low-maintenance sophistication, we think Wind & Willow is a fantastic representation of modern midwest design.

We’ve been proud to stock items from Araya Jensen at the shop since our inception and it has been such a pleasure to watch this friend grow her business alongside ours. As such, we cannot be more excited to announce Forage as the location for Jensen’s official Indiegogo Launch event.

Join us next Wednesday April 16th at the shop for a meet and mingle with the maker herself. We'll be starting at six, and with so much to preview from Jensen's spring line, we sincerely hope you'll be sticking around until the end. Araya's official launch announcement is something to celebrate and we can't wait to start.
