Forage Modern Workshop was formed out of a desire to provide a community where customers become friends, the competition becomes partners, and shopping becomes a movement. Every person has a story to tell and adds value to our community; our homes and furniture should do the same.

We love the Midwest and Good Design.

The four of us believe that our homes should reflect our unique personalities and are the physical representation of our story, filled with both old and new furniture and decor, gifts from friends and items we saved for months to buy, pictures of our past and spaces where we invite friends and family to gather. Our homes should be beautiful, because our stories are beautiful.

We believe that work should be enjoyable.

Much like the Eames Office at 901 Washington Boulevard, Forage Modern Workshop will be an idea shop; we will work to provide a space that supports young and fresh design, as well as encourages creative and entrepreneurial risks.

"Life was fun was work was fun was life." - Eames, The Architect and the Painter

We think that the future is bright and ours for the taking.

We Want to Get to Know You, Too.

Michael Smith | Owner

"I live in the Merriam Park Neighborhood of St. Paul with my wife Heidi, my friend Chris and my dog Rufus. I love my job! I spend most of my time working; doing design for Brownsmith Restoration and selling real estate. When I am not "working" I play music in the band Greycoats. I also enjoy taking my wife out for dinner."

What piece of furniture or style of home best represents your personality and why?
Furniture - Steelcase desk. I love retro - and I love working!  Home - If it wasn't for my lovely wife, and if I was rich, I would live in a Frank Lloyd Wright home. I love the combination of simple lines and warm spaces. It would be an early modern home.

What's the best meal you've had in the last year?
Seafood Basil Curry at Sea in Brooklyn

James Brown | Owner

"John Steinbeck changed my life forever when I read East of Eden. I love riding my bike, going out for a beer, and trying to come up with ways to change the world all in the same night.  I live with my wife and two daughters in South Minneapolis."
What piece of furniture or style of home best represents your personality and why?
Early modern homes from the 20-30s because they were exploring a new expression instead of a reinterpretation of an existing form.  It was the beginning of an amazing time in America to be a designer; they were creating design that was original and was a unique cultural expression.

Heart of Gold by Neil Young

Rebekah Cook  |  Business Manager

"I have expensive taste, to a fault.  Whether it's shoes or a couch, I'm always drawn to the highest quality piece with the highest price.  I tend to spend most of my days in an alternate universe (my brain) where everything is neat and organized and people perform as efficiently as possible.  In the world most people see, I love spending time with my husband, going to see live music, trying new restaurants with my dining club, trying to figure out how to be witty like my sisters, and wearing old t-shirts."
What piece of furniture or style of home best represents your personality and why?
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Chair with a vintage sheep skin throw.  I'm neat and firm and can come across a little bold, but I'm loyal, can be comforting and warm when needed, and tend to fit nicely into any surrounding.

It's raining and you can only pick one song to listen to, what song would it be?
Star Witness - Neko Case

What's the best meal you've had in the last year?
I can't decide between omakase at Masu in NE Minneapolis or The Classic burger at Uneeda Burger in Seattle, Washington.

Heidi Smith  |  Buyer

"I love vintage! -clothing, textiles, homes, furniture, decor etc.  I live in a big 100 year old home in a great neighborhood in St. Paul with my talented husband and scruffy dog.  I love music, coffee, baking, and feeding people as we work to restore the home to it's former glory."
What piece of furniture or style of home best represents your personality and why?
A lovely shaped, yet sturdy stuffed chair with a floral fabric from the thirties - feminine, vintage, warm. This is me:  Strong enough to lift heavy furniture, but always in a vintage dress and red lipstick.

It's raining and you can only pick one song to listen to, what song would it be?
Bright as Yellow by the Innocence Mission

What's the best meal you've had in the last year?
Gazpacho and cucumber soup, Lamb chops, roasted potatoes and garlic, fresh vegetables with homemade baba ganoush and guacamole, fresh baked bread, finished with Izzy's raspberry chocolate ice cream all at a friend's house.
