From the introduction:

The purpose of this book is to make fabric selection easier and wiser, not only in terms of guiding the reader away from pitfalls and toward uses of current technology but also making him aware of what fabric is in its broadest sense.

Understanding how to choose and specify a fabric wisely gives the decorator a head start in the overall design of any room. Of course, questions of aesthetics, performance, and cost must be answered in terms of the intended function of each fabric within the room. However, that function must itself be comprehended as primarily aesthetic and psychic: that it is to make people feel more secure, more related, and more alive gives us a whole new understanding of the need for fabric. Doggedly continuing to think only in terms of windows needing curtains, and sofa covers is essentially misleading.

… The purpose of this book, therefore, is to clarify just these aesthetic, functional, and techinical facts which must be at the fingertips of anyone who wants to use fabrics to their best advantage. In Part 1 the aesthetic factors are discussed; Part 2 deals with performance; Part 3 describes the physical properties of many types of fabric; Part 4 coloring; Part 5, the Market—including costs, budgeting, and investment; and Part 6 is a glossary-index of fabric terms.
