Nomadic Furniture, by Hennessey and Papanek

Publisher: Pantheon Books (Random House)

Copyright 1973 (first edition)

150 pages

Hardcover

This book is missing the dust jacket. Light pen mark on the inside cover. Very good vintage condition.

From the title page:

"How to build and where to buy lightweight furniture that folds, collapses, stacks, knocks down, inflates or can be thrown away and recycled. Being both a book of instruction and a catalog of access for easy moving. …With easy-to-follow diagrams, photographs, and drawings by the authors.

From the Introduction:

You are nomadic: Americans are said to move about every 2-3 years on the average. Some of us, like the writers of this book, move more and more over greater distances. ...Changing life-styles among young people, tend to make us all more nomadic.

The Problem: Basically, we can buy furniture, build it, or inherit it. All of it is bulky, heavy, often fragile and always a bitch to move. There are hundreds of books to tell us “how-to” design and “build-it-yourself.” Also even more books to tell us what to buy (& where $ for how much!) Often there may be one or two known-down or folding or inflatable pieces included, but just accidentally. But there is no book that shows how to build furniture that is easy to make, but furniture which also folds, stacks, inflates or knocks own or else is DISPOSABLE WHILE BEING ECOLOGICALLY RESPONSIBLE!

Nomadic Furniture II, by Hennessey and Papanek

Publisher: Pantheon Books (Random House)

Copyright 1974 (first edition)

153 pages

Hardcover

Dust jacket showing wear. Light yellowing to interior pages. Very good vintage condition.

From the front flap:

Nomadic Furniture 2 is a sequal to the authors’ highly successful Nomadic Furniture, a book which showed readers how to build and where to buy lightweight furniture that folds, inflates, knocks down, stacks, or is disposable and can be recycled, with many easy-to-follow instructions. In their new book, Victor Papanek and James Hennessey include a vast array of ideas for which they had no room in their first volume, as well as a great many ideas that have come up since its publication. Nomadic Furniture 2 is a bigger book, with a wider range than the first. It goes into all sorts of difficult and important new areas such as storage, lighting, and rooms for children. And the authors give valuable guidance on the selection of useful and well-designed photographic and stereophonic equipment. Among the subjects covered are:

Now You Are Even More Nomadic

On Human Measure

Seating

Sound & Sight

Lighting

Storage

Children: Babies and Small Kids

Eating

Working

Sleeping

Lounging

On Getting Away From It All

Tools & Materials

As was the case with Nomadic Furniture, the book’s great appeal is that it leads you to think in new ways about your own surroundings. As the Denver Post said of Nomadic Furniture: “In all ways… this is an important book and… it makes one think and reassess one’s own lifestyle.”
